Czechoslovakian Airlines Flight 523, an Ilyushin Il-18D, was a scheduled flight on Sept 5, 1967 from Prague to Havana, Cuba, via Gander International Airport. On board were 69 passengers and crew. It crashed just seconds after taking off from a refueling stop at Gander. Thirty-five people were killed. In 2015, a memorial plaque was unveiled in Gander to honour the victims. The plaque site is located adjacent to the NL T’Railway track, about 1.6 km east of the Circular Rd/T’Railway intersection.
