Compassion Monument

A piece of steel girder from the World Trade Centre is the heart of Gander's "Compassion Monument". Displayed atop a 4,100kg (9,000lb) chunk of granite, it commemorates the lives lost during 9/11 and the compassion of local people who assisted almost 7,000 unexpected passengers in Sept 2001. Donated by the Bethpage (NY) fire department in 2011, the steel was displayed in the Town Hall's lobby until 2021. On the 20th anniversary, the monument was unveiled to the public on the Hall's front lawn.
