Women's Film Festival Celebrating 20th Year

The Women's Film Festival is celebrating its 20th year with the most films ever. The festival runs from October 20th to the 24th in St. John's, and takes in the Arts and Culture Centre, the Majestic Theatre, Masonic Temple, The Rooms and more. Chair Noreen Golfman says viewers are in for more than ninety films, showcasing talent from sixteen countries. Kelly Davis says this is the first year she is showcasing one of her films. Davis says her film is about a young boy who goes to his barber with a very specific request, but you'll have to go to the show to find out what that is.

Trails, Tales and Tunes

As summer approaches we start to think about our favourite festivals. Usually, one theme will be highlighted at a time: food, music, culture elements, unique natural features or distinctive local lore. For those of you who enjoy hiking, music, folklore and great food, maybe even yoga, the dates for the Trails, Tales and Tunes Festival (TTT) are definitely worth etching in your agendas, circling on your kitchen calendar or saving in your Blackberry. Happening for the third consecutive year, the Trails, Tales and Tunes Festival will take place from May 15-24 in Norris Point, Gros Morne National Park.

Over 1,000 beluga whales spotted off St. Anthony, Newfoundland

The citizens of St. Anthony on the north coast of Newfoundland woke up to a marine spectacle never before seen along that piece of coast this morning. What local observers estimate to be in excess of one thousand beluga whales are turning the near shore ocean white with their activities.

PAB Marina a Great First Step

By next season boaters from near and far will likely be able to tie up at a new marina in Port aux Basques. The town hopes that construction will start this spring and by the time the town finishes its countdown to come home year, residents may begin to see visiting vessels docking at the new facility.

This year the rugged coast of western Newfoundland will open up a scenic bonanza to hikers when three new sections of the International Appalachian Trail are completed. Glacier-carved fjords, pristine river valleys and 1,000-foot-high waterfalls are some of the gorgeous natural scenery that visitors will be able to explore.

Appalachian Trail Gets Longer in Canada

The Appalachian Trail keeps growing. Well, the Canadian part of the trail does, at least. Not many people are even aware that this well known hiking trail extends into Canada, but that's been the case for more than a decade. The Appalachian National Scenic Trail that is managed by the U.S. National Park Service is still the same 2,175-mile trail that was completed in 1937 between Georgia and Maine. But in the 1990s, the trail was extended into Canada and became the International Appalachian Trail.

New Ferry Has Cruise Ship Feel

The crew of Marine Atlantic's newest ferry getting are ready for sea trials in preparation for a spring launch.The Atlantic Vision has been docked in North Sydney, N.S., since December and is scheduled to hit the seas of the Gulf of Saint Lawrence on the North Sydney-to-Port aux Basque route in April. Captain Paul MacDonald said the new passenger and cargo ferry has a "cruise ship feel." "The restaurant, the buffet and the cabins offer a little more of an upscale experience," MacDonald said.

First Glimpse of Atlantic Vision

The Atlantic Vision slid into the dock at Port aux Basques for the first time at about 8:45 a.m. this morning (Friday) as dozens of local residents stopped along town streets to watch, take photos and video. The vessel didn't appear to have any problems making the turn in the harbour or backing into the dock. The Vision's horn sounded long and loud announcing its debut in the gateway town. New Section of Appalachian Trail to Open in NL in 2009

This year the rugged coast of western Newfoundland will open up a scenic bonanza to hikers when three new sections of the International Appalachian Trail are completed.
