Trail riding and backcountry/mountain snowmobiling in Newfoundland and Labrador offers riders coastal journeys with beautiful ocean vistas and exotic treks through untouched forests, over ancient mountains, and along the edges of glacier-carved fjords. With an extensive trail network, over 5,000 km of trails, and an abundance of great backcountry/mountain riding, snowmobiling here rivals anything the Rockies have to offer. In fact, some call this place the Snowmobiling Capital of Canada.

Quite often, tour operators combine snowmobiling packages with backcountry accommodations – the perfect way to experience fine dining and entertainment after a long day of riding. And with an extended riding season from as early as November and as late as May, the snowmobiling season in Newfoundland and Labrador is unusually long. Search the listing of tour operators below for options.

Trail Riding

With over 5,000 km of trails, riders can enjoy the province's pristine wilderness – at their own speed. Pack your things and ride for a few hours or a few days; on your own or with a guide. Our groomed, marked snowmobile trails are a great escape from the ‘everyday' winter months.

Labrador is unbelievable, with its massive caribou herds and sweeping tundra, heavy snowfall, northern lights, and untouched forests – a true snowmobiler's paradise.

On the island of Newfoundland, an extensive trail system is expanding continuously. Take a ride through wide-open backcountry and old woodcutting roads now used for winter adventure riding. Explore the 900 km T'Railway Provincial Park across the island that follows the path of the former Canadian National Railway.

Ride the edges of a glacier-carved fjord of Gros Morne National Park, follow river valleys, skirt hills, or trails originally formed by the aboriginal people and early settlers. Our powdery trails lead to fascinating areas, such as L'Anse aux Meadows National Historic Site, where the Vikings landed over a thousand years ago. Ride the snowbelt of Central Newfoundland and experience coastal vistas and eagle-eye views. Take in one of numerous annual snowmobile festivals in the region.

One of the most enjoyable experiences in snowmobiling is meeting other sledders. Some of the best places for this are the warm-up shelters where you can have lunch and share stories from the trails. A lot of life-long friendships begin this way.

Trail passes are available on the island from the Newfoundland and Labrador Snowmobile Federation at nlsf.org or if you’re in Labrador, get your trail passes from one of the local snowmobile clubs.

Backcountry/Mountain Riding

Newfoundland and Labrador offers world-class mountain riding. The rugged, mountainous landscape is vastly different than the Maritimes and Central Canada, and is an exotic destination for winter adventure seekers.

Prime snowmobiling grounds such as the Lewis Hills, are five times older than the Rockies with an elevation of 2,670 feet – the highest point in Newfoundland.

And the average annual snowfall is 16 feet in some areas. With copious amounts of breathing room and powder-play areas, extreme riders are in for an adrenaline rush you can't get from other snowmobiling destinations.

The key to an amazing and successful snowmobile adventure in Newfoundland and Labrador is using an experienced tour operator. They know the terrain, all the secret spots, and where the best powder hides.

Cain's Quest

For the true snowmobiling enthusiast, there's nothing quite like Cain's QuestCain's Quest – Canada's longest and the world's toughest snowmobile endurance race. At more than 2,500 km of high-energy racing, it promises to keep snowmobilers on the edge of their seats. The one thing all riders share is the awe-inspiring winter Labrador landscape.

Snowmobiling Cool Spots

Most of the cool spots on the island are back country but are accessed using the groomed Newfoundland and Labrador Snowmobile Federation Trail System, with the exception of the Viking Loop, the Buchans Plateau and Mt. Sylvester.
