The Islands Experience

For this tour, you’ll spend three days on beautiful and unique Fogo and Change Islands exploring traditional outport life and the rugged coastal landscape of an area with a remarkable blend of both old and contemporary culture.

Day 1 – A day of scenic contrasts

Catch the ferry in Farewell for a short coastal journey to the serene fishing village of Change Islands, known for its well-preserved fishing architecture. Enjoy a unique tour “up the tickle” in a 100-year-old vessel with an old-fashioned make-and-break engine. Visit a Newfoundland Pony refuge, shop for locally produced crafts and garments, or take a leisurely seaside stroll on the Squid Jigger’s Trail. Sleep deeply in the comfort of an authentic fishing merchant’s home.

Day 2 – Fogo Island

Take the 20-minute ferry ride to neighbouring Fogo Island, the largest inhabited island off the province’s coast. Go to Tilting, the province’s first provincial registered heritage district, and meet the descendants of Irish settlers who came here in the 1700s. See traditional Newfoundland architecture with an intimate look at the Dwyer House. In Joe Batt’s Arm, see how the modern architecture of the international artists’ residence melds with the landscape. Enjoy a codfish dinner sourced by sustainable harvesting, and compare shoe sizes with a sorceress at the oddball Witch’s Foot. Overnight on the island.

Day 3 – One of the four corners of the world

Hike Brimstone Head, known as one of the four corners of the earth by the Flat Earth Society. Visit local art galleries and quaint museums. Geocache along the trails that lead to relocated communities. Catch the ferry back to Farewell, refreshed and ready to continue exploring Adventure Central Newfoundland.
