In Search of the Great Auk
The pursuit of birdwatching is an excuse to be out in the elements for Fogo Islanders. Todd McGrain’s bronze statue of The Great Auk sits a prominent watch at Joe Batt’s Point, gazing out towards nearby Funk Islands and standing as a marker memorializing the tragic loss of the species. Today, the coastal waters and Fogo Island’s environs are home to many of the Great Auk's cousins—birds that help tell the story of the island and its history; carriers of tradition and bringers of delight.
