Guiding Light

Cape Bonavista Lighthouse Provincial Historic Site
St. John's

Built in 1843, the light at the Cape Bonavista Lighthouse was a beacon for seafarers in the area until 1962 when it was replaced with an electric light on a nearby steel tower. Take a guided tour of the lighthouse and experience a lightkeepers day in 1870. Cape Bonavista Lighthouse is one of the few in the world where you can still climb up the stone tower and see the same seal oil fueled catoptric light apparatus that was used in the 1800s. Step back in history.
