What an Amazing 48 Half Hours

24 Jun 2011

Newfoundland and Labrador Tourism’s 48 Half-Hours contest to give away 48 free flights in partnership with WestJet wrapped yesterday with an incredible 900,000 entries from across Canada. The contest, hosted exclusively on Facebook, generated more than 620 entries per minute.

The contest was a one-of-a-kind celebration of Newfoundland’s unusual half hour time zone. It gave people across the country a chance to win a free round-trip WestJet flight to Newfoundland and Labrador every half hour for a non-stop period of 48 half hours (or 24 hours to some folks).

People were allowed to enter as many times as they liked and the winners were posted to Facebook and Twitter at the end of each half hour. In addition to the 900,000 entries, Newfoundland and Labrador Tourism’s Facebook ‘likes’ doubled.

NL Tourism staff stayed up through the night to monitor the contest and interact with the audience. The response was so overwhelmingly high it was sometimes hard to keep up. Within the first two hours there were 100,000 entries and over the course of the contest, thousands upon thousands of people tweeted and posted comments to Tourism’s Facebook page.

Congratulations to the 48 winners and a huge thank you to all the participants!
