Canadian Signature Experiences

There’s no better way to soak in the culture of Newfoundland and Labrador than through authentic encounters and hands-on learning. The kind of adventures highlighted by the Canadian Signature Experiences (CSE) collection. This island-wide excursion includes many of these awarded experiences, along with a few others, that lead to a true understanding of the living, breathing culture and traditions that exist in every corner of our province.

Day 1 - Experience the Wonder with Iceberg Quest

Once you’ve arrived at the capital city of St. John's, head out to sea for a trip of a lifetime with Iceberg Quest Ocean Tours (CSE). Cruise among the towering icebergs that make their way here every year, and keep an eye out for playful humpback whales. You’ll have another chance to tour with Iceberg Quest when you reach Twillingate.

Day 2 - Whale Close Encounter Tour

After a day on top of the water, it’s time to get a more close-up view. When you're snorkelling with Ocean Quest (CSE), in Petty Harbour, the behemoth in front of you is either an iceberg or a humpback whale, or a WWII shipwreck. Either way, you're in for an eyeful.

Day 3 - Picnics by the Sea and Legendary Whale Wonders

In Ferryland, stop for a picnic under a lighthouse, at the edge of the continent, surrounded by breaching whales. Now this is roughing it. Blanket, picnic basket, and delicious meal included at Ferryland Lighthouse Picnics (CSE).

Head north to Cape Broyle where Stan Cook Sea Kayaking (CSE) offers an adventure of a lifetime. When a whale (or an iceberg) breaks the surface of the water, people tend to take notice. It's hard not to when it's only a paddle’s length away.

Day 4 - Wooden Boats and Their Builders

Spend the day at the Wooden Boat Museum in Winterton with a master boat builder, and get hands-on instruction and interpretation of this disappearing craft. Explore rock wall gardens and outdoor sculptures before sitting down to a wonderful meal nearby.

Day 5 - Barbour Living Heritage Village

The past meets the present at Barbour Living Heritage Village in Newtown. You can take a tour around the village, learn to mend nets at the fisherman’s stage, or bake your own berry pie with Aunt Hetti.

Day 6 - Architecture at the Edge

Come to a place where even the buildings have to stand up on their tiptoes to take it all in. The award-winning Fogo Island Inn (CSE) is on everyone's bucket list – now is your chance to take in this exceptional Newfoundland outport design.

Extend your stay in the area and enjoy hiking, biking, discovering the artist’s spaces, and learning about the land through guided excursions.

Day 7 - An Icy Cruise Into Nature

Twillingate is lucky enough to be home to two Signature Experiences. Take an icy cruise with the Iceberg Man himself on the Twillingate Island Boat Tour (CSE). With whales and icebergs offshore, and live performances onshore, you're surrounded. This must be what it means to be centre stage.

Or tour with Iceberg Quest Ocean Tours (CSE), at their western location. Watch the crew reach over the vessel’s side to collect ‘bergy bits’ – small chunks of actual iceberg ice! Hear the crack and sizzle as the ice is dropped into your drink.

Day 8 - Lighthouse and Pub Night

Take your time travelling from Twillingate to Gros Morne National Park to end the day watching the sunset at Lobster Cove Head Lighthouse. Some evenings they host an outdoor evening of fire and stories. Or enjoy Pub Night with local entertainers Anchors Aweigh, and have a time with traditional Newfoundland and Labrador music and comedy.

Day 9 - Majestic Mountains and Glacier-Carved Fjord Boat Tour Experience

Your tour begins with a three-kilometre walk through barrens and tuckamore forest. Don't max out that memory card before you even reach the boat. Then climb aboard with BonTours (CSE), the only boat tour operator on Western Brook Pond, and behold the spectacular landlocked fjord, with 2,000-foot waterfalls that turn into mist before reaching the pond's pristine waters.

Day 10 - Take Your Place Among the Vikings

Two great chapters of the Norse Sagas played out at L'Anse aux Meadows National Historic Site (CSE). Follow the path of the Norsemen to explore the earliest known European settlement in North America.

Day 11 - A Lighthouse Inn + Whales + Bergs

If you want to see whales and icebergs, sometimes you just have to pick the right vantage point. And that point is the Quirpon Island Lighthouse Inn (CSE). In your private cove on a remote island, hear the calls of humpback whales echo off massive icebergs.
