Gros Morne National Park
It took Mother Nature 485,000,000 years to mold Gros Morne National Park into the geological and visual wonder we know today. The second largest National Park in eastern Canada, Gros Morne National Park is a UNESCO World Heritage Site stretching across 1,805 square kilometres of western Newfoundland as part of the towering Long Range Mountains.
Encircled by tiny seaside communities, and encompassing forests, freshwater fjords, bogs, barren lowlands, moose, and striking cliffs and shorelines, this area is also world- renowned for its complex geology. It was here that geologists proved the theory of plate tectonics. The Tablelands, a mountain of flat-topped rock of a kind usually found only deep in the earth’s mantle, is a truly awe-inspiring sight.
Things to Do
Hiking: Gros Morne National Park's spectacular beauty provides the perfect backdrop for all kinds of outdoor adventures, particularly hiking. Discover both marked and unmarked trails winding throughout the landscape.
Explore the park's dense forests for rare plant, animal and bird species or run your hands over ancient sea floor and preserved ocean avalanches, exposed to the land by the collision of the earth's tectonic plates nearly 500,000,000 years ago.
Boat tours: Take a stroll along the trail to Western Brook Pond, over marshland draped in butterwarts, great sundew, orchids, dragon's mouth, and pitcher plants. At the end of your walk, hop aboard a boat tour with Bon Tours taking you through the fjord. You'll also get to sail close enough to feel the spray on your face from some of the highest waterfalls in eastern North America.
If you have your own canoe or kayak, you can use it on Trout River Pond and Bonne Bay; launch areas are located at Trout River Pond, Mill Brook, and Lomond day-use areas. Alternatively, if you don't have your own craft, you can take a guided sea kayak excursion with one of the various tourism operators located in the park, such as Gros Morne Adventures.
Theatre and music: Areas of unusual and inspirational beauty often lure artists and writers, and Gros Morne National Park is no exception. Theatre Newfoundland and Labrador has its own summer-long theatre festival, which puts off professional, culturally-rich performances at Cow Head and various other communities throughout the area. The town of Woody Point is an especially beautiful artistic hub within Gros Morne National Park and its historic Heritage Theatre hosts many performances, from rock bands to plays and author readings. The eclectic annual Writers at Woody Point festival is particularly popular and sells out every year, as people flock to listen to and meet writers and musicians from around the world. Trails, Tales & Tunes is another hugely popular event, which takes place annually in Norris Point. The festival incorporates daytime walks around stunning scenery, afternoon workshops and a wide range of entertainment.
Coastline and Beaches: There are several excellent sandy beaches in the park. The sandy beach of Shallow Bay near Cow Head stretches for kilometres. There is also a beach at the mouth of the fjord at Western Brook Pond, and a warm, sandy beach located right next to an excellent seafood restaurant in the town of Trout River.
Camping: Enjoy warm, summer days by pitching your tent in campgrounds along the shores of the ocean, ponds, lakes or rivers in the area.
There are five campgrounds in the park, and three of them – Berry Hill, Shallow Bay and Trout River Pond – can be reserved online at Parks Canada's Campground Reservation Service or by calling toll-free at (877) 737-3783. Lomond campground is available on a first-come, first-served basis, and there is self-registration at the Green Point campground. For TTY service, please dial (866) 787-6221. If you are calling from outside Canada, the international number is (450) 505-8302.
Group camping is available at Berry Head. Primitive campsites are also available along various trails. For information on these please call (709) 458-2417 / 2066 or email grosmorne.info@pc.gc.ca.
For further Gros Morne camping information visit the "Where to Stay" section of the Parks Canada Gros Morne National Park website.
Skiing: During the winter, try your hand at Nordic skiing and snowshoeing throughout the park. Visit the communities in and around Gros Morne and enjoy the hospitality at restaurants, shops, festivals and events year round. The impressive, downhill slopes of Marble Mountain in Corner Brook are also just a 1½-hour drive away.
Where do I begin?
Gros Morne National Park is a big place. To get your bearings, you might want to consider starting your visit by stopping at the Visitor Information Centre in Rocky Harbour or the Discovery Centre in Woody Point. Accommodations ranging from hotels and inns to B&Bs can be found throughout the park.
