Don't fall off
A view of the rugged coastline of Newfoundland and LabradorWhat exactly would the edge of the world look like? According to the people at the Flat Earth Society – an interesting lot no doubt – it would look a lot like here. In fact, it is here.

They say somewhere along our 29,000 kilometres of coastline – enough to cross the continent four times and back – amongst the cliff tops and sea caves, the coastal forests, and ancient fishing villages, lies one of the four corners of the Earth. At Brimstone Head, in Fogo, to be exact. The Society also contends that if you venture too far beyond it, you would actually fall off. Despite hundreds of years of science to the contrary, and some pretty good satellite imagery, this remains an intriguing notion.

Fact? Fiction? It hardly makes a difference. A few days spent touring towns and villages that have stood sentry over fjords and inlets, guts and bays for over half a millennium will reveal – it’s not a matter of truth at issue here, but rather the awesome beauty of this place that compelled someone to venture out on a limb with such a hypothesis. Either way, one thing is beyond a shadow of a doubt – no one who sees the edge ever looks at the world quite the same way again.
